We're happy to report that we're pretty darn happy these days. But it was not always like this.
Just a few short years ago we were struck by the realization that after all our planning and saving we were not in a position to retire and live the retirement dream we'd always wished for. Our 'Happily Ever After' was slipping away from us.
That was a hard reality to swallow. After all, we'd followed the rules our whole lives and had certain expectations. We love to RV and our life's goal was to retire and travel the country in our RV, visiting every National Park in America while we're still young and healthy enough to really enjoy it.
As baby boomers, we grew up with an understanding that if we worked hard, got a good education, and did the right things we would be able to retire one day and enjoy the fruits of our labors. That's how things were for generations before us. America was 'the land of opportunity' and our founding fathers professed we had unalienable rights to 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness'.
So we were completely dumbfounded when, approaching our 60's, we did the math and saw there was no way, if we kept doing what we were doing, that we'd be able to retire and enjoy our happily ever after. No way at all!
What had happened to the American Dream?
We were devastated when that really sank in. After all, we had big plans we'd worked for all our lives. Where had we gone wrong?
The truth is, we did nothing wrong: Nothing, except buy into what we were told.
'Get an education. Work Hard and climb the corporate ladder. Save. Retire and live happily ever after.'
That's how things were. But, that's not how things are now for most America
