The difference between CBD oil and essential oil

I love essential oils and have been using them for a few years now. Recently, we hear a lot of talk about CBD oils. My first question was “what is the difference between essential oils and CBD oils”?
Essential oils are powerful. But so are CBD oils. They do share some similarities, but there is also a difference.
Let’s explore these very two different alternative health options.
In review, we know essential oils are found and extracted from the bark, seeds, leaves, petals, stems, and roots of plants.
But CBD is extracted from the plant Cannabis sativa. This annual herbaceous plant which originated in eastern Asia can now be found in many other parts of the world.
The Cannabis plant is made up of more than 104 chemical compounds which are known as cannabinoids. The two most popular are:
THC, which is responsible for creating an intoxicated state; and
CBD, which is not psychoactive.
Cannabidiol has been abbreviated to CBD which is one of the many cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. It got its own name because it is produced in high enough concentrations.
Equally, Tetrahydrocannabinol is also abbreviated to THC which is another one of the many cannabinoids found and produced in significant quantities in the hemp plant.
In a previous blog, I outlined what to look for when purchasing an essential oil. And in this blog, I will outline what to look for when purchasing a CBD oil.
The hemp plant can be either male or female = unisexual. As with essential oils, the plant is affected by weather conditions, how it is cultivated, how it is harvested, the brand, the quality of standards. Reputable essential oil companies always test their oils through a method of Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and the same applies to CBD companies.
Essential Oils are extracted from the plant materials by way of steam distillation. But with CBD oils the solvent extraction method is employed. This method is similar to steam distillation but instead uses a solvent such as ethanol, isopropyl alcohol to petroleum-ether, and naptha instead of water to separate the CBD oil from the plant material. This results in a mixture of CBD oil with the solvent. The solvent then evaporates leaving behind pure CBD oil.
Just as essential oils can be used in many ways for natural healing and maintenance, so also can CBD oils be used in many ways for natural healing and maintenance and without affecting the mind.
CBO is not an essential oil. Why? Because CBD can be taken internally while it is highly recommended NOT to take essential oils internally.
CBD is taken under the tongue or via spray into the mouth.
Essential oils are applied topically, diffused or inhaled.
CBD bottles are sold with a dosage dropper and also as a spray
Essential oils are sold in brown or blue glass bottles. When used topically essential oils are always accompanied by a carrier oil. Or essential oils can be diffused.
